It’s An Addiction

It’s an addiction

Addictions can start at any time and can be anything. Sugar, alcohol, drugs, porn, exercising, weight, reading, tv, social media, the list goes on and on. An addiction is anything that you can’t go a day without thinking about or acting upon it something that controls your life.

People who say they aren’t addicted to anything are lying. That may be a bold statement to make, but many people can’t go a day without looking at their phone or having a cup of coffee. While these aren’t terrible addictions they are still an addiction. Having that little monster on your back day in and day out; reminding you that you need what you’re addicted to, to survive. That monster is there 24/7, it’s always in the back of your mind in every situation. You could be at work, out on the town with friends, at a family event or even sharing an intimate moment with the one you love and all you can think about is what that little monster is telling you. Telling you that you need to put all of your time and effort into feeding your addiction and then you will be truly happy.

When you don’t give into your addiction you feel like crap, anxious, irritated and like the whole world is going to end unless you cave into your addictions.

An addiction is not something that can be easily controlled. When someone gets stressed their addiction is going to be the first thing that they turn to because it provides a feeling of comfort and security. It’s what helps them through the hard times. However, it can also take them away from their their family, friends and life in general.

Understanding someone’s addiction is going to be a near impossible task. The closest thing someone may be able to compare it tot is if they are struggling with the same addiction, but even then everyone’s addiction is unique to them in the way they cater to it, became addicted to it, and how it controls their life.

Having an addiction is scary because you feel completely alone in a world full of people. The reality is though, that everyone you see is struggling with an addiction of their own. We feel ashamed, weak and like we should hide our addiction from everyone because it’s not something to be proud of.

But…

What if we did just the opposite? What if everyone talked about how they were feeling and what they were struggling with? Maybe then the world would finally start to understand the feeling of having that little monster on your back trying to control your life. Maybe then we could start to help one another overcome our addictions and learn more than we ever thought we could about something that affects so many people’s lives. Maybe then we can start to feel less shame for being imperfect and start to understand that being perfect is an impossible task, and that if we keep trying to be perfect we will end up living a life we don’t love.

Maybe…

Just maybe we all start to love each other and not judge another person’s addiction because we don’t even know half the story behind it.
