Do You Like Me?

Do You Like Me?

Social media is a big part of our lives and it doesn’t appear to be going away any time soon.

The use of technology has become a part of who we are in the world. From personal use, to businesses using it, there is no real way to avoid technology all together.

So, what is social media?

Social Media was created to make it easier to keep connected with people you know by posting photos/videos, instant messaging and being able to share every thought that goes through your head instantaneously. But…the use of social media has almost become the opposite of that. Yes, you do still know every detail about a person’s life if they share it and you can reach someone any time of day anywhere in the world if you choose, but the problem with social media that isn’t being addressed is how easy it has become to bully others online and how it is even easier to get rid of the evidence so others may never know what happened.

Nearly 43% of all children have been bullied online in some form. Whether it is mean comments, getting made fun of, or as far as telling a person to go kill themselves. None of which are acceptable at all.

But some of that bullying can happen without another person knowing they are doing it. If a person points out a flaw that a person is self-conscious of or even if a person doesn’t get as many likes as another one of their mates, that can lead them to doubt themselves and lower their self-esteem.

Now, some of you may be thinking well that’s just the person’s fault and they need to grow up because getting a like isn’t going to make them happy.

If you are thinking that way I ask you; Why does that person feel so compelled to get those likes?

Maybe it is because they don’t have the best self-esteem, but maybe it’s because as a society we judge people based on how many likes they get on a photo.

It’s simple, right? The more likes you have the better of a person you are.

Wrong.

Who we are is not how many likes we get on a photo or post, it is about what we do for ourselves, others and for the world. It’s about loving each other unconditionally, being selfless, giving back and taking care of the world and all its inhabitants.

Getting likes feels great don’t get me wrong, but they don’t change who we are as an actual real life human.

We can hide behind screens all we want, but its who we are in in real life, not with a screen in front of us that matters the most.

Who we are is based on how nice we are to everyone and everything around us. Getting likes will not make you a better person, so maybe it’s time to put down the screen and start to connect with the world around us and truly make yourself happy.
